John Kelly says Trump wants him to stay at White House

The news came after Kelly marked his first anniversary as chief of staff amid a swirl of rumors about his potentially imminent departure. According to three Trump associates and two White House officials, the shortlist now includes Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin as well as Freedom Caucus Chairman Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C.

Mr Kelly hit the one-year mark as Mr Trump's chief of staff Monday.

A White House official confirmed the report to Breitbart News. In April, Kelly denied reports that he called Trump an "idiot" and mocked his lack of policy knowledge.

Almost a month after Porter's resignation, Kelly admitted that he mishandled his response to the allegations against Porter.

A retired Marine general, Kelly replaced Reince Priebus in the role.

The image belied a fraught relationship between Trump and Kelly, who has been credited with restoring a semblance of order to the chaotic West Wing - but at the cost of grating on the freewheeling commander-in-chief.

Perhaps Kelly should have had a clue his new job would bite when he found out he was getting it via a surprise Trump tweet. As a chief with no background in politics, he'll likely be responsible for running White House operations while Trump focuses on his re-election campaign. It's a one-man show and no one is getting in the way of Trump's delusion that he's nailing it on a daily basis.

Trump and Kelly have privately argued at times and complained about one another to confidants.

But relations between the two have improved in recent months amid signs that Kelly plans to stay on, aides said.
