Baker Mayfield of Cleveland Browns says preseason debut performance 'not so bad'

He appeared finished by the second quarter; he had four total carries for 43 yards. The New York Giants rookie running did not waste much time in showing what the Cleveland Browns missed when they selected quarterback Baker Mayfield instead of the former Penn State tailback in this year's NFL Draft.

Mayfield found tight end David Njoku on a 10-yard TD pass to cap a 14-play, 72-yard drive on his second series. Taylor's first completion was a 32-yarder to Jarvis Landry, who apparently did something other than "bless" Janoris Jenkins afterward, as the newest "Hard Knocks" star drew a 15-yard taunting penalty.

Callaway, the Browns' fourth-round pick, played despite being cited for marijuana possession and driving with a suspended license. Then, he picked up a third-and-six and a fourth-and-two, both with his legs.

Mayfield isn't exactly playing the underdog role after going first overall in the draft, but he won't let you forget that he's not the tallest guy, that he was once a college walk-on and that, entering 2018, he's entrenched as a backup behind new Browns quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

Perhaps the most intriguing battle of Week 1 of the 2018 National Football League preseason, a matchup between the Cleveland Browns and the New York Giants, should be quite fascinating.

Mayfield closed 11-of-20 for 212 yards with two scores on the night.

It's only one preseason game, but there were plenty of reasons to be hopeful.
