Field resignation reflects 'deep divisions' in Labour, Tom Watson says

The leadership is doing nothing substantive to address this erosion of our core values.

He said either the House of Commons votes to remove Field from the position after an MP submits a motion, which the Labour party may want to do to discourage other potential defectors; or Field also resigns his Birkenhead seat to call a by-election, at which point he would be automatically removed from the committee and replaced by a Labour MP. It is a major wake up call.

The politician, who resigned the Labour whip on Thursday, said he is considering whether to step down as an MP and trigger a by-election in his constituency of Birkenhead.

Speaking on BBC's Newsnight, Labour MP Chris Williamson said: "The only intolerance that I've seen is inside, or a section of the parliamentary Labour party who have not been prepared to honour the democratic decisions of Labour Party members".

My original submission to the party on a specific bullying issue goes back eighteen months.

"I will be looking for a solicitor whoever that might be". We have been the great anti-racist force in this country and we must be seen like that.

Earlier this week, Britain's former chief rabbi called Corbyn an antisemite and said comments about Zionists he made five years ago were the most offensive by a senior United Kingdom politician in half a century.

I hope Jeremy will adopt the global convention. We want to keep our journalism open and accessible and be able to keep providing you with news and analyses from the frontlines of Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish World.

Labour sources have said Mr Field's wish to serve as an Independent MP while remaining a member of the party is "not possible".

Field said in a letter to his constituents that it was with "considerable sadness" that he had made a decision to resign because he could not "lend any legitimacy to the most appalling culture".

Mr Watson said in a statement Mr Field's departure was a "serious loss".

He said: "I have been through all this before when I have been deselected and I am still the Labour party candidate".

Lewis MP added: Despite promising a 'kinder politics, ' time and time again Corbyn has allowed people to get away with doing and saying things which have no place in public life.

Frank Field, sickened to the core by the anti-Semitism swirling around his leader, has finally snapped. His resignation from Labour is significant.

Frank Field has quit in protest over antisemitism in the Labour party. It is inevitable that if a political party is led by an antisemite who lets Jew-hatred run rampant, people of conscience will leave.

They should ask for their constituents' consent to continue to represent them on a different basis.

He continues to face pressure over Labour's new code of conduct, which does not implement the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition and examples of anti-Semitism in full.

The move saw him accused of betrayal and led to a no-confidence vote in the Birkenhead constituency party that he has represented as an MP since 1979.

The long-time eurosceptic sided with the government to pass Brexit laws days before.

"Reports of bullying, intimidation and nastiness are rife on social media taken along with the drift in the Labour Party to the extreme left and its association with racist and anti-Semitic views this Corbynite Labour party must cut most moderate Labour members to the bone - Mr Field is right to call them out on this".
