Uefa Nations League: What is it and how will it work?

Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN) continues to bolster its football portfolio by acquiring exclusive television and digital rights for UEFA Euro 2020, and inaugural UEFA Nations League, just a week after retaining media rights for UEFA Champions League. A new competition needs big teams, big players, and a big stage.

The Nations League pushes back Euro 2020 qualifying into 2019, and affects the 10 groups to be drawn on December 2 in Dublin.

Manufactures Adidas designed the ball which features the colourful imagery that helps make up the Nations League logo, which is also prominent on the trophy.

England defender Harry Maguire is the first global footballer (to our knowledge) to raise his hand and admit that he hasn't got the foggiest idea how the UEFA Nations League actually works.

Twenty teams will make it to Euro 2020 from qualifying, with the top two in each of the 10 groups advancing.

After winning their second World Cup, France will play their first game after Russian Federation 2018 in a match which doesn't come much tougher, as they take on Germany.

League C - This group contains 15 teams in one pot of three teams and three pots of four.

Each group contains three or four teams, with everyone playing each other home and away between September and November this year.

On Friday, September 7, Italy tackle Poland and thereafter England will take on 2010 World Cup winners Spain Saturday, September 8, when Northern Ireland face Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Understanding the UEFA Nations League is a lot like an orange. It has been made to replace the huge amount of worldwide friendlies, and this is going to affect the Euro qualifying. The four group winners from League A will qualify for the finals, to be played at a yet to be decided European city in June 2019.

"It won't prevent them from going through tougher times, but it's not necessarily linked to the tag of world champion". But what exactly is the Nations League I hear you ask?

The Germans, world champions in 2014, crashed out in the group stage of the World Cup in Russian Federation in June for their earliest exit in 80 years.

"Every opportunity we get, we always try to do the best we can for our fans and ourselves and the tournament in two years will be no different".

Hugo Lloris was amongst the top goalkeepers at the FIFA World Cup and the former Villarreal star will be hoping to match his senior's exploits from the quadrennial tournament.

The success or failure of this competition won't be decided by the suits who sit around UEFA's executive table, but by the fans who will, or won't, turn up to games, and even by the players who may or may not resist the temptation to pull out of squads as they made a habit of for worldwide friendlies. The winners of each group throughout the four leagues will automatically gain a place in the play-offs for the 2020 European Championships.
