Man Arrested in Extraordinary Airport Car Chase

An amateur video posted online showed the vehicle smashing into the building with a bang and showed the view afterward of the smashed doors on either side.

After continuing for a few metres the driver abandons the auto while it is still moving and attempts to flee on foot.

There, the auto rammed through two glass doors at the airport's Terminal 1 to drive onto the runways, she said.

He then fled the auto and ran along the runway as multiple police cars chased him, as caught on video.

His identity has not yet been made clear and his motive is not known.

Lyon Saint-Exupéry, France's third busiest airport, was closed and about 50 flights cancelled after the man, in his 30s, smashed through a security barrier today and drove through the terminal, on to the airport apron and then the runway.

Flights are being diverted to Marseilles or other nearby destinations. The airline only had to cancel one United Kingdom flight during the incident.

Video posted to social media and broadcast on French TV shows the closing moments of a dramatic chase scene, where a white vehicle speeds past the runway, with police in pursuit.

Lyon airport's operator suspended all flights after what it termed an "incident", before announcing later Monday afternoon that flights were "gradually resuming" and expected to be back to normal around 6:00 p.m. (1600 GMT).

Local media identified the vehicle as a grey Mercedes with a foreign registration. The driver, who was reportedly responsible for a lot of damage, was arrested.

Early reports suggest a man has been arrested at the scene. "You should be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of local French authorities", they advise.
