Tiger Woods wins Tour Championship, first Tour win in 5 year

Little in Woods' life has been ideal in the 1,876 days since his last victory, with four back operations that left him wondering whether he would play again, but he took up here where he left off in 2013, extending his unbeaten record as a front-runner to 24-0.

Rory McIlroy congratulates Tiger Woods after winning the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club.

Woods finished fourth in the PGA Tour's season stats for scrambling, saving par 64.64 per cent of the time when missing a green in regulation.

"I didn't want to get run over", Woods said with a laugh. "You just have to suck it up and hit shots". And once I got the ball onto the green, then the tournament was over.

The victory was Woods' 80th on the PGA Tour, two short of the all-time record held by Sam Snead.

Thousands of fans spilled on to the 18th fairway to follow Woods to the green chanting "U-S-A" and "Tiger, Tiger" after his approach found a bunker on the edge of the green.

Rose, meanwhile, received a $10 million consolation prize in the form of the FedExCup, which is awarded to the victor of the tour's season-long points race, after a birdie at the 18th gave him a 73 for a share of fourth. He's playing so well on a very hard golf course.

Just as incredibly, Woods very almost won the FedExCup too, but Britain's Justin Rose birdied the 18th to secure top spot and the $10million (£7.6m) prize.

Rose entered the week ranked No. 2 on the FedEx Cup point list, which meant if he could win at East Lake, he automatically would win the FedEx Cup as well.

September 16, 2015: nearly a month after recording his best finish of season with a tie for 10th in the Wyndham Championship, Woods announces a second microdiscectomy surgery and hopes to return in "early 2016".

"They knew what I was struggling with", Woods said.

He had flirted with victory several times this year, mounting thrilling late charges that enraptured galleries but ultimately fizzled. That might be enough to return him to No. 1 in the world. Jason Day was the best of them in 18 place, Cameron Smith was 20 and Marc Leishman 21. He won even if he did not quite win the FedEx Cup, the four-tournament aggregate event that went to Rose.

With that kind of scene in Atlanta, who would blame him?

1,876 - days since his previous win, at the 2013 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Tiger Woods leads the Tour Championship by three strokes at 12-under heading into the final round on Sunday, and he certainly looked ready for competition two hours before he tees off.

Woods won for the first time in more than five years.

At his last Ryder Cup, in 2012 in Medinah, Ill., Woods finished 0-3-1 in his matches.
