Barcelona can't rely on Messi to solve everything, admits Suarez

Lionel Messi came off the bench to help FC Barcelona claim a point on Saturday, and coach Ernesto Valverde has explained why the superstar started on the bench.

Messi was substituted on after 55 minutes and had a hand in Barca's late equaliser after his shot was turned in by Munir El Haddadi, but the hosts men could not find a victor after recovering from Oscar De Marcos's earlier strike.

Messi, who was introduced in the 55th minute, had already hit the post and seen a free kick cleared off the line when he set up Munir El Haddadi to equalise with five minutes to play.

"We can not depend on Messi solving everything", Suarez said.

"We wanted to get the second goal because a one goal lead is never enough".

"We are not anxious because the season is long and has only just started, but we are angry about the last results", Messi told reporters.

Lionel Messi's importance to Barcelona does not diminish with the passing of the years - they go into Wednesday's Champions League group game with Tottenham relying on him more than ever, Daily Mail reports.

"There are no excuses today", Barca midfielder Sergio Busquets said.

Wissam Ben Yedder volleyed home a third to wrap up the game before half-time - his sixth goal in three games.

And Valverde is under no illusions about the challenge facing Barca against the Premier League side, who lost 2-1 at Inter despite taking the lead in their Group B opener. I know it's a risky decision [leaving Messi out]. "It's absolutely my responsibility".

Sergi Roberto was presented with a late chance to rescue a point for the Catalan giants from route-one football, but the right-back fizzed his first-time shot over the bar from 16 yards out the right.

"There's no anxiety", he added.

Luis Suarez squandered a good opportunity for the hosts in the first half and Barcelona found visiting goalkeeper Unai Simon in inspired form throughout. They will be tight and it will be hard for us.

"We have to improve and become stronger in defence, which is the most important thing". We're coming from a season when it was hard to score against us and now it's taking very little for [the opposition] to score.
