Villa sack Bruce after poor season start

Villa sack Bruce after poor season start

The atmosphere at Villa Park on Tuesday night turned toxic as Villa were held to a 3-3 draw by the bottom club, Preston.

So too is Terry, the five-time Premier League victor who spent last season as captain at Villa Park. "Certainly for someone like him, I'm surprised he knew what a cabbage was".

A further statement issued on behalf of the board said: "We would like to place on record our gratitude to Steve and his team for their hard work and commitment".

"Aston Villa Football Club can confirm that manager Steve Bruce and his assistants Colin Calderwood, Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence and Gary Walsh are leaving their posts with immediate effect after having their contracts terminated".

Villa's hierarchy decided that allowing the 57-year-old Saturday's trip to Millwall would be futile and have handed Under-23s manager Kevin MacDonald the reins temporarily.

Purslow will now begin the hunt for a new manager, with Villa still to appoint their new sporting director.

The former Birmingham City boss has come under huge pressure in recent weeks following the side's poor start to the Championship campaign.

Sawiris and Edens originally backed Bruce after taking control of the club from Tony Xia in July - amid reports Henry had been sounded out for the role - but the duo signalled their desire for change a fortnight ago by sacking several members of Villa's scouting staff.

He led the club to the Championship play-off final last season, which they lost to Fulham at Wembley.
