Authorities direct traffic on Hoffmeyer Road near the Vintage Place neighborhood where several law enforcement officers were shot, one fatally, on October 3, 2018, in Florence, S.C.

Florence Police Department Chief Allen Heidler described 52-year-old Sgt. Terrence Carraway as a 30-year veteran of the force and a close personal friend, telling reporters Thursday his death "is a tragic loss of life for me".

Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone (L), Florence Police Chief Allen Heidler and Florence County Chief Deputy Glenn Kirby speak to the media following a shooting where several law enforcement officers were shot in Florence, S.C., on October 3, 2018.

Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone wants the public to keep the families of the officers shot in their prayers and "lift them up". "The way the suspect was positioned, his view of fire was several hundred yards, so he had an advantage". He also allegedly held children hostage inside, authorities said.

They called ahead and knew someone inside the home was expecting them. The station says that person's condition his unknown. Seth was struck in the shooting, he said. The sheriff and police chief both cried as they spoke to reporters just hours after the shooting.

"Fire was being shot all over", Boone said.

He remembered slain Carraway, who'd been with the department for 30 years, as "my brother". "He was a giant of a man, but he was the proverbial gentle giant, and I loved him". South Carolina Bar records show Frederick Hopkins used to be a lawyer but has been disbarred. Officials anticipate he'll be released later Friday and transferred to a detention center in Richland County, before being taken back to Florence County.

Hopkins in 2014 was charged with a count of disorderly conduct, according to the AP. Lott said Seth Hopkins also ended up in the hospital after the shooting but was released from hospital care and jailed Friday.

Three deputies and one city officer remain in critical condition.

After images surfaced of SC police officers taking the shooter safely into custody, some on social media questioned how this was possible. Six other law enforcement officers were shot, as was a 20-year-old who was in the home.

Various media reports have not identified type of rifle but Hopkins, a Vietnam veteran, has reportedly bragged on Facebook that he is a skilled shot with an M-14 rifle, which he carried as an infantry soldier.

WIS-TV reported Thursday that Florence County Chief Deputy Glenn Kirby identified the suspect Thursday as 74-year-old Fred Hopkins.

"This is simply devastating news from Florence", Gov. Henry McMaster tweeted.

President Donald Trump offered his thoughts and prayers while praising the law enforcement officers for their service to the community.

President Trump also commented on Twitter, saying, "My thoughts and prayers are with the Florence County Sheriff's Office and the Florence Police Department tonight, in SC".

A judge chose to wait for more information before granting the elder Hopkins, a disabled Vietnam veteran, a court-appointed attorney.
