Republicans' hopes in the upcoming U.S. midterm elections have been boosted by Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation as a Supreme Court justice.

On Oct. 6, Kavanagh was confirmed to the court by a vote of 50-48 in the Senate, a slim victory after multiple women had accused him of sexual misconduct.

Supporters of President Donald Trump found a new target for one of their signature chants: Sen.

As Justice Kavanaugh settles into his lifetime seat on the bench of the nation's highest court, the left remains angry.

Kavanaugh had been accused of sexual misconduct in high school and college. There were no disruptions by protesters during the oral arguments, with security tight in the courtroom.

"This is a really divided time", said Justice Elena Kagan, who addressed the current climate of the court at an event at Princeton University last week. Kavanaugh could serve for decades in the lifetime job.

"Our representative government and the rule of law depend on their dedication, their bravery and their sacrifice, so thank you so much for keeping the Senate safe", he said.

Kavanaugh posed questions to lawyers in both cases before the court, his first one coming about 20 minutes into the arguments.

"We've seen a 500 percent increase in our fundraising at the end of the month as tensions have been boiling over in Washington and voters have started to pay attention", Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel explained on Fox News Tuesday.

Tuesday's cases involved the 1984 Armed Career Criminal Act, a "three-strikes-and-you're-out" criminal sentencing law that boosts prison sentences for people who are convicted of crimes involving guns if they previously have been convicted of certain other crimes.

The justices themselves have expressed concern in recent years about public perception of the court.

He says that "under historic scrutiny", Kavanaugh was "proven innocent".

She said: "It saddens me because our judicial system has been viewed as one of the main pillars of our constitutional government".

Kavanaugh has denied the claim and others that later surfaced.

He later wrote in a newspaper opinion piece that he regretted some of his comments.

The RNC chairwoman said she wasn't surprised, because the way the Democrats, particularly Senator Dianne Feinstein, handled the Blasey-Ford letter accusing Kavanaugh of sexual abuse 36 years ago was "shameful". "The Supreme Court is a team of nine, and I will always be a team player".

Kavanaugh is expected to give the Supreme Court a reliable 5-4 conservative majority.

"This will be the first time a Supreme Court Justice has ever sworn in a former clerk to take his seat - a handsome moment which reminds us that freedom is a tradition passed down from generation to generation", Trump said.

Following the Senate's vote to confirm Kavanaugh, RAINN said in a statement that the group is "disappointed in the outcome" but "glad that America got the opportunity to hear Dr. Blasey Ford's testimony".

In an interview with The Associated Press, the Kentucky Republican cited the Trump administration's "extraordinary" success with the GOP-controlled Congress — including a growing economy, two new Supreme Court justices and congressional action to cut regulations and taxes.
