Mega Millions jackpot jumps to $970M ahead of Friday’s drawing

Powerball and Mega Millions are the two games with the largest payouts offered by the N.C. Education Lottery, and both are sold in many other states.

Tuesday's Mega Millions winning numbers were 3, 45, 49, 61, 69 with a Mega Ball of 9 for a jackpot worth $667 million at the time.

Despite insanely long odds - one in 302.5 million - someone with an unparalleled gift for picking numbers - or an astonishing amount of good luck- very well could match all six Mega Millions numbers on Friday, and win a jackpot that now stands at a mind-blowing $970 million. If somebody wins the Mega Millions on Friday, it will be the second-largest jackpot in US lottery history, behind the 2016 Powerball jackpot that was worth $1.6 billion, split across three winning tickets. Michigan Lottery said the majority of tickets for a jackpot are purchased on the day of the drawing.

No one has matched all six numbers and won the Mega Millions grand prize since July 24.

If the victor chooses the annuity option, the jackpot would be paid out over 29 years. Check your state lottery's cutoff time for Mega Millions ticket sales if you want a chance at the jackpot.

On Oct. 17, Ronnie Parker of Dawson Springs cashed a $1 million ticket from Tuesday night's Mega Millions drawing.

Saturday's jackpot will be $430 million. The amount you will win is likely $0, because the odds of winning either jackpot are one in several hundred million.

The average American spends about $223 per year on lottery tickets, according to a survey from LENDedu.
