Russian Soccer Fans Were Injured in a Dramatic Escalator Accident in Rome

An escalator has given way at a metro station in Rome leaving several people injured, some of them seriously, Italian media report.

State television RAI broadcast a video of the incident that showed a packed escalator suddenly speed up, hurtling people down the stairs.

People on the parallel escalator were seen trying to help others clamber across the divide to safety.

The cause of the accident on Tuesday night was not immediately known.

Emergency crews outside the station in central Rome.

"The scene that we found was people piled up at the bottom of the escalator", said Rome provincial fire chief Giampietro Boscaino. One person reportedly lost a leg. Firefighters said seven were in serious condition. ANSA also quoted city transport agency officials as saying maintenance is carried out on metro system escalators every month.

Most of the injured are Russian, but a small number are Italian, according to the newspaper.

Fans were headed toward Rome's Olympic Stadium, where CSKA Moscow was scheduled to play AS Roma on Tuesday.
