New Jersey Man Breaks His Hip but Wins the Lottery

Livingston is still at the hospital, where he will need to undergo a hip replacement.

New Jersey man Earl Livingston, 87, was walking to buy a ticket for this week's Mega Millions jackpot when he fell and broke his hip, WCAU-TV reports.

He was taken to Jefferson Stratford Hospital for treatment.

Powerball's historic jackpot comes after the U.S. Mega Millions lottery reached a jackpot of $1.537 billion, just short of a world record.

The pool won US$1 million (AUD$1.4m).

The winning numbers for the $687.8 million prize are 8-12-13-19-27 and a Powerball of 4.

Ms Mickle told NBC 10 she didn't believe her uncle when he told her he'd won from his hospital bed. "And then the staff came into the room and they were saying congratulations".

The second-largest ever is this past week's Mega Millions and the third-largest is a $758 million Powerball from August 2017.

"We were overwhelmed and humbled that they did this", niece Bobbie Mickle said. The next drawing will be held on Saturday at 11 p.m. EST.

It could be the fourth largest in USA lottery history and the game's third largest jackpot.

"I still feel the same way", she said when she picked up her big check.
