What we learned from Duke’s big win over Kentucky

What we learned from Duke’s big win over Kentucky

Facing a Kentucky squad with twin towers in Reid Travis and E.J. Montgomery, the Blue Devils needed all the help they could get grabbing boards and controlling possession, and White delivered. Spurred on by a roster that included a trio of future lottery picks in Karl-Anthony Towns, Devin Booker and Willie Cauley-Stein, the Wildcats absolutely smothered a Kansas that was in the top five of every poll in the country. The Jayhawks never trailed in the second half. That's the Kentucky Wildcats. And all Duke did was hand John Calipari the most lopsided loss of his 10-year tenure in Lexington.

I foresee the Wildcats playing like a disrespected team here.

With just two exhibition games under their belts, we did not have a whole lot to go on when breaking down this Kansas team.

We knew that would be the case with Barrett.

Starting four freshmen, Duke shot 54 percent while making 12 3-pointers. He was a terror in transition, he was unstoppable when he turned the corner and he oh-by-the-way hit 3-of-7 threes. "I told [my team], 'I got outcoached, you guys got outplayed".

The same can be said about Williamson, although that wasn't necessarily a given entering the season. But there were legitimate questions about how well that would translate to the college level, where player are closer to his size, and his strength, and his athleticism.

No. 2 Kentucky has more experienced players than No. 4 Duke.

Keldon Johnson scored 23 points to lead Kentucky.

You can't guard him, either, as evidenced by the 28 points he posted on 11-for-13 shooting.

Before we get to Dahntay's words. That did not go well.

TMZ Sports spoke to Dahntay Jones, a former Duke All-American, and he says Zion's dominating season-opening performance against Kentucky last night was evidence of greatness to come.

In January and February, there can be a tendency for top freshmen to look ahead.

The Blue Devils, however, may have issues with their depth going forward as they received very little from their non-freshmen and from their reserves until garbage time.

A top 15 recruit in his own right, Jones could not be a more flawless point guard for this Duke team.

RJ Barrett led the way for the Dukies with a game-high 33 points in addition to six assists and four rebounds. They beat Arizona in 2001 and MI in 1992. Why am I not getting as many touches? But even with that and the fact Duke has the talent to reach the Final Four, I'm not booking a trip to Minneapolis after one game in the regular season. We've seen that before with one-and-done teams.

But, dude, did you see that game?
