13 dead after California bar shooting

A sheriff says 13 people were killed at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, including a sheriff's sergeant and the gunman.

The status of the gunman has not yet been confirmed, but police said they did not believe there was a wider threat to the public. "He gave his all and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero because he went in to save lives, to save other people", Dean added. Whittler ran toward the restaurant's back door, where "everyone pretty much dog-piled on top of each other", she said.

He said he heard from people inside that they were hiding in bathrooms and the attic of the bar. Well, I don't want to say he was dead, but he was shot.

At least 12 people, including a police officer, were killed after a gunman forced his way into a popular bar in the U.S. state of California and opened fire on people there.

Twelve innocent people were killed when a gunman opened fire inside a California bar. Witnesses said many of those inside were college students.

Witnesses told CNN that patrons were there for the "College Country" night with line-dancing, music, drinks and food, and the place was packed with a young crowd. He was dead when police arrived on the scene, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said.

Authorities are still treating it as an "active scene".

No other information was immediately available. Rapid-fire gunshots could be heard as officers crouched behind a police vehicle, weapons drawn.

"I don't know the severity of the injuries, I don't know if any are life threatening or not, but there are no reported fatalities".

The Ventura County Sheriff's Office announced that a procession will be held for Helus at 10:00 a.m. today.

Witnesses reported that Long, clad in black, hurled smoke bombs into the Borderline Bar & Grill as he let loose a fusillade of shots about 11:20 p.m. Wednesday.

"He shot a lot, at least 30 times".

According to CNN, Thousand Oaks Mayor Andy Fox was informed of the shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill around midnight, after which the law enforcement agencies responded quickly. The official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

No word yet on the number of injured, but around a dozen people are known to have gone to the hospital.
