Whitaker recusal from Mueller probe unlikely, but Rosenstein still involved

Whitaker has no intention of recusing himself from overseeing the Mueller probe, the Washington Post reported.

Whitaker's comments on "Morning Answer" echo a CNN Op-Ed from December 2017 where he argued that the Mueller investigation was coming "dangerously close to crossing" a red line after reports suggested that the probe was looking into Trump's finances.

Trump defended Whitaker's appointment as acting attorney general despite failing to get Senate confirmation, noting that Mueller was never confirmed by the Senate, either. But I didn't know Matt Whitaker.

The attorneys general also said Muller must have the "full authority to investigate and, if warranted, prosecute any violations of federal law".

Sessions' firing immediately threw into question whether the 18 month old Mueller probe will be able to continue unimpeded.

US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer shortly after the news broke said in a statement that Whitaker in his new role should recuse himself from overseeing Mueller's investigation.

"He worships him", a longtime friend said of Whitaker and Trump.

Still, the President praised Whitaker as "very highly thought of" and said that Whitaker is only taking heat because "anybody that works for me, they do a number on him".

President Donald Trump is moving to distance himself from Matthew Whitaker as he faces criticism over his choice for acting attorney general.

After news broke Wednesday that Trump had forced Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign, leaders of the group United for Action of Central Florida made a decision to act.

He also said on CNN previous year that he could see a scenario in which Sessions' replacement doesn't fire Mueller but "just reduces his budget to so low that his investigation grinds to nearly a halt".

The Democrats said they also want the Justice Department to protect the integrity of Mueller's investigation and to preserve relevant documents. He also said there was no evidence Russian Federation interfered in the election at all.

The "Nobody Is Above The Law" rally was one of about 900 taking place at across the country by, which declared that Trump crossed a red line by forcing Sessions to resign and violating the independence of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of alleged Trump campaign ties to Russian Federation.

Mueller's probe looks to establish whether Trump or his campaign actively colluded with them to steal the White House.

The New York senator said he found the timing of Sessions's departure "very suspect".

Trump's nomination of a permanent replacement for Sessions will require confirmation by the US Senate, which remains in Republican control following Tuesday's midterm elections.

Both Whitaker and Clovis are rooted in Iowa politics, and both ran for the 2014 Republican Senate nomination.

Trump asked for Jeff Sessions' resignation and then replaced him with Whitaker, his chief of staff. Whitaker has criticized Mueller's probe.
