Elon Musk won’t be seen smoking pot in public again, says NASA

About this told the head of NASA Jim Breidenstein in his Twitter. Under this architecture, NASA would become one "among many" customers.

Now, Musk's small stunt on the sets of Joe Rogan's show might have been harmful but that did not go down well on his resume for NASA.

It also continues a trend at NASA toward public-private partnerships for exploration.

While some of the companies are relatively new, others, like Draper, have been involved with the USA space program for decades.

NASA sees this as a step toward long-term study and human exploration of the moon - and eventually Mars.

The Trump administration also directed NASA to seek and encourage additional private sector participation. Now Draper is in a new, homegrown space race to deliver unmanned craft to the lunar surface.

NASA intends to award multiple contracts for these services through the next decade, with contract missions to the lunar surface expected to begin as early as 2019, and with a company's first delivery no later than December 31, 2021.

'We think we can achieve this in about 10 years, the idea being prove the capability, retire the risk, prove the human physiology and then go on to Mars'. No money was awarded Thursday.

Bridenstine said he ordered safety reviews of SpaceX and Boeing, another NASA contractor - which were first reported by The Washington Post earlier this month - but stressed that he had wanted the reviews of their corporate culture before Musk was filmed smoking weed.

After safely landing on Mars following its almost seven month journey, Nasa has released the first pictures taken by its InSight spacecraft, which has opened it solar arrays to charge batteries.

Astrobotic Technology has built a lander called Peregrine, and have obtained backing from NASA to create a standalone system to land on the moon. CLPS will enable the first NASA payloads to be soft-landed on the lunar surface since the Apollo Program, and open a new era in science and exploration with regular commercial deliveries of uncrewed payload to the lunar surface. Carpooling to the Moon - perhaps with academics or another company - should reduce the cost, he said. SpaceX carries cargo, and soon will carry astronauts, to the International Space Station. "If you want to learn the age of the solar system, you take samples from the moon and analyze them".

"We are excited to partner with these awesome companies at the dawn of a new era of lunar and solar system exploration", stated Moon Express founder & CEO, Bob Richards.

The program is part of the agency's effort to work with commercial aerospace firms.

Earlier this year, NASA shocked scientists by canceling the Resource Prospector mission, the only American lunar rover now in development.
