Russia's News Agency Apologizes for 'Downed Israeli Plane' Hoax

It said a Syrian surface-to-air missile was sacked in the direction of an open area of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights but it was unclear if it had hit Israeli-held territory.

The Israeli army did not claim responsibility for the bombardment and declined to comment on the report.

Two missiles hit "weapons depots belonging to the Lebanese Hezbollah (militant group) as well as Iranian forces" in Kisweh, and another missile hit the area of Harfa, where there is a Syrian military base, the Britain-based monitor said.

"Our air defense forces shot down an Israeli war plane and four missiles before they reached the targets", a Syrian security source was quoted as saying by Russia's RIA news agency as saying on Thursday night.

Abdel Rahman said Thursday was the first time Syria's air defenses had been called into action since the incident on September 17 in which 15 Russians were killed.

That incident created tensions between Israel and Russian Federation, another Syrian government ally, with Moscow saying it reserved "the right to take commensurate measures in response".

Iran is a key ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad and supports a number of militias that have fought alongside the Syrian army and its allies.

Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes in neighbouring Syria against what it says are Iranian targets, many of them in the area south of Damascus.

A Syrian opposition figure familiar with the area where the incident occured said its proximity to the Syrian Golan Heights made it a hub for the recruitment of Iran-backed militias and their deployment across the strategic border area with Israel.

In May, Israel struck and Iranian military base in the area killing some 23 fighters, including five Syrian regime troops and 18 other allied forces, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Russian Federation subsequently upgraded Syrian air defenses with the delivery of the advanced S-300 system, which Damascus had said last month would make Israel "think carefully" before carrying out further air raids.

Since then Israel has been very careful with its operation over Syria.

The Sept. 17 downing by Syrian anti-aircraft fire, after Israeli jets attacked a suspected Iranian arms shipment to Syria, caused a diplomatic rift between Israel and Russian Federation, and Moscow blamed Israel for the incident.
