Former President George H.W. Bush dies at 94

Bush become the 43rd president.

McGrath said funeral arrangements would be announced "as soon as it is practical".

Bush served as president from 1989 to 1993, the end of a life in public service that spanned four decades.

Bush's death follows the passing of his wife, former first lady Barbara Bush, who died on April 17. She reportedly suffered from congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Bush, a MA native, joined the United States armed forces on his 18th birthday in 1938 and eventually became the youngest naval pilot at the time.

He was appointed by President Richard Nixon as ambassador to the United Nations and then, with Nixon embroiled in the Watergate scandal that would lead to his resignation, as chairman of the Republican National Committee, tasked with limiting the damage to the party.

The 41st commander-in-chief left his mark on almost every area of government as president, vice president, ambassador, Central Intelligence Agency director and a member of Congress.

US President Donald Trump has issued a statement, expressing condolences, and praising late Bush's "unflappable leadership", as well as the Republican politician's "authenticity, disarming wit, and unwavering commitment to faith, family and country". Dan Quayle of IN as his running mate, and won, IN 1988. He encouraged Americans to gather in places of worship "to pay homage" to Bush's memory, adding, "I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance".

In 1989, he ordered 24,000 USA troops into Panama with the goal of removing Manuel Noriega from power. Around 23,000 United States troops took part part in "Operation Just Cause" and invaded Panama.

George H.W. Bush enlisted in the Navy on his 18th birthday in 1942, right out of prep school.

And Mr Clinton noted that Mr Bush never stopped serving even after leaving office, working on tsunami relief in Asia and within the USA after Hurricane Katrina.

The elder Mr Bush's prime interest was foreign policy.

He assembled a coalition of 32 nations to drive Iraqi forces out in a matter of weeks with a lightning air and ground assault.

Despite his achievements beyond the USA border, Bush was less successful back home. The two were married 70 years.

He surprised many with his success, and by 1958 had settled in Houston as president of an offshore drilling company.

The last veteran of World War II to serve as president, Bush came to be seen as a consummate public servant and a statesman who helped guide the nation and the world out of the U.S.

In 2017, several women accused Bush of sexual misconduct and telling lewd jokes.

Bush released a statement on the evening of November 30, 2018.
