Former major league players Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo were killed in a vehicle crash in Venezuela caused by highway bandits who then robbed them, officials said on Friday.

Castillo played five seasons in the Major League Baseball, mostly with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2004-2007.

The newspaper cites media accounts as saying the person behind the wheel was the driver for former Arizona Diamondbacks player and winter ball teammate Carlos Rivero, 30.

Castillo, 37, last appeared in the majors for the Astros in 2008.

According to a report from ESPN, Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo were killed in Venezuela on Thursday night. He spent time with the Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, and Houston Astros before his stint with the Angels.

All four men were members of Barquisimeto's pro team Cardenales de Lara. In 592 career games, he hit.254 with a.296 on-base percentage, a.379 slugging percentage, 39 homers and 218 RBIs. "During his two seasons in Houston, Luis was an extremely popular player with his teammates and the Astros staff. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends".

The Venezuelan professional baseball league announced all three scheduled games Friday were cancelled and it said flags will fly at half-staff in all stadiums for three days.
