Donald Trump slams Mitt Romney as another 'Flake' after lawmaker's criticism

"The Trump presidency made a deep descent in December", Romney wrote in an op-ed published by Trump's most hated newspaper, the Washington Post.

Republican Sen. Rand Paul attacked Republican Sen. -elect Mitt Romney on Wednesday for virtue signaling.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Mr Romney excoriated Mr Trump as a "fraud" who was "playing the American public for suckers".

"With the nation so divided, resentful and angry, presidential leadership in qualities of character is indispensable", Romney wrote. "America has always been looked to for leadership", Romney wrote, adding, "Trump's words and actions have caused dismay around the world".

He added that Trump's actions had caused "dismay around the world" and alienated traditional allies in Europe.

Mr. Trump said he would "much prefer that Mitt focus on Border Security and so many other things where he can be helpful".

Karpowitz said Lee appears to moving toward the camp of Republicans who are willing to work with the president, though that's not to say Romney isn't willing to do that.

Brad Parscale, Trump's 2020 campaign manager, responded to Romney's piece in a tweet Tuesday evening, writing that the incoming senator from Utah "lacked the ability to save this nation" while Trump "has saved it".

When US Congress reconvenes on Thursday, Mr Trump faces a new challenge on the domestic front - in November's mid-terms the Republicans strengthened their hold of the Senate but lost the House of Representatives.

But others, including Trump, had plenty to say about it.

The same year though, the pair met for dinner amid reports Mr Trump was mulling appointing Mr Romney as his secretary of state.

"I was expecting something, but I'm surprised he did it this quickly", Trump said, noting that he expected criticism from Romney, despite his endorsement. Answering another question, he suggested Romney's anti-Trump views are not representative of Utah voters. McMullin ran as a conservative alternative to Trump in the 2016 presidential election. But the former MA governor who fell short as the Republican presidential nominee in 2012 insisted he won't make another run at the White House himself.
