Tottenham win over Cardiff 'important for our confidence' - Mauricio Pochettino

Kane had failed to breach Cardiff's defence in his three previous matches against the Welsh club and only did so this time because of a touch of fortune.

Kickoff from Cardiff City Stadium in Cardiff, Wales is slated for 12:30 p.m. ET.

Kane's third-minute opening goal is the fifth successive New Year's Day he has scored in the Premier League, equalling a record held by Andy Cole and Steven Gerrard.

Christian Eriksen then made it 2-0 for Spurs nine minutes later with a clever finish from the edge of the box, although Warnock will be disappointed with the way his defenders backed off and gave the Dane space to wriggle and shoot home. Son has only one Premier League game left - against Manchester United on January 13 - before he leaves to play for South Korea in the Asian Cup.

Danny Rose was recalled to the starting XI by manager Mauricio Pochettino and he proved his value to the team.

"I don't care. Of course I will watch, it will be an unbelievable game and I enjoy football", he said.

However, Wolves managed to bounce back in the final 18 minutes thanks to goals from Willy Boly, Raul Jiminez and Helder Costa to secure a shock 3-1 win. If Liverpool loses to City, Spurs will be back in it.

Though the sight of constant jousting between Tottenham Hotspur's media officer and a reporter at Mauricio Pochettino's recent press conference descended into something resembling comedic tones, there was a serious undercurrent.

Cardiff entered the contest in confident mood after four points from festive fixtures at Crystal Palace and Leicester had moved them three clear of the relegation zone. It was beaten 5-1 at Manchester United just before Christmas and was also thrashed 5-0 by Man City at home in September.

Cardiff found it hard to get possession after that, although substitute Junior Hoilett did enliven them after the interval in their search for a first goal against Spurs for 41 years. "All the planning goes out of the window", he told the BBC.

"I was pleased we hung in there because it's easy to throw the towel in when you're 3-0 down to a team like this".
