Mediterranean diet named No. 1 eating plan for 2019

U.S. News & World Report rolled out its list of the best diets of 2019, and the Mediterranean diet took the top spot.

Those who aren't as concerned about losing weight may consider the Mediterranean diet, which was named the Best Overall Diet, the Best Diabetes Diet, the Best Diet for Healthy Eating, the Best Plant-based Diet, the Best Heart-healthy Diet, and the Easiest Diet to Follow for 2019. Research also links the Mediterranean Diet to longer lifespans.

The easiest diets to follow include the Mediterranean diet, the Flexitarian diet and WW (Weight Watchers).

"We are seeing an interest in people eating to mimic the eating patterns of people in spots of the world where people are particularly healthy", she said.

While no single diet is best for everyone, U.S. News' expert rankings are meant to promote the eating styles most likely to improve health and steer people away from misguided diet plans - like the last-place Dukan diet, a restrictive, high-protein system.

The DASH diet, made up of low-sodium and healthful foods, was originally started by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) as a diet to help reduce blood pressure.

The Mediterranean diet puts an emphasis on living an active lifestyle first and foremost. Thanks to science, times have certainly changed since your parents tried these old-school (though often misguided) diet tips.

Although the popular Keto diet ranked high for fast weight loss, it landed way down on the Best Diets list - tying for number 38.

Also recommending a diet rich in produce, whole grains, nuts, olive oil, and seafood.

This plant-heavy diet focuses on adding five food groups - "new meat", fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy and sugar and spices - to your diet, instead of taking foods away.

The campaign reflects WW's strategic evolution to build on its leading position in weight management, helping people to achieve their weight loss goals, while also delivering a more holistic platform for health and wellness, including innovations around nutrition, activity, mindset, inspiration and community.
