Canadian Bianca Andreescu heading to ASB Classic finals

Top seed Wozniacki coasted past Laura Siegemund in her opening match in New Zealand but went down 6-4 6-4 to Canadian teenager Andreescu, who is ranked 149 places below the world number three.

Not bad for a teenaged qualifier who started the week ranked No. 152 in the world.

After sealing the victory, she dropped her racket, bent down and put her hands over her head as she received a nice ovation from the crowd.

"I believe that anything is possible and tonight I think I did the impossible", Andreescu said in an on-court interview after the match. I've had a couple of back issues the past couple of months.

Andreescu is competing in just the fourth WTA-level main draw of her career, and first since Québec City 2017. "With the support of you guys, I really think I can do it".

And while one Canadian crashed out of the tournament in the quarter-finals, there was another who continued her giant-killing spree with a win over the sixth seeded Venus Williams. Well, she'd better get used to this sort of stuff, because she proved that win wasn't a one off. She was No. 1 in the world and won a Grand Slam. Andreescu has dropped two sets: one to Laura Siegemund in the final qualifying round, and one to Venus Williams in the quarterfinals.

"My goal was only to qualify and maybe get a couple of rounds in, but now I've beaten a couple of top players", the surprised teen said. "I don't know what to say right now because Bianca gave me a hard time today".

After taking time off to rest her back, Andreescu won a Challenger event last October at Florence, S.C. She followed that up with back-to-back semifinal appearances in Saguenay, Que., and Toronto before closing the season by winning a title in Norman, Okla. "She played some terrific tennis, different from a lot of players on the tour and I'm sure we're going to hear a lot more of her".

"She can do any shot you can ask of her", Branstine said from Orange County, Calif.
