Here’s what they did when Obama tried it

Speaking with Laura Ingraham on Monday night, Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway suggested that if the media and Democrats really cared about migrant children, they would agree with Donald Trump that they should never have made the risky trek in the first place.

"The president's position is: There is a crisis at the southern border, and Democrats are refusing to negotiate", Pence said.

UPDATE (1:50 p.m. Eastern): President Trump tweeted that he will address the nation live on TV at 9 p.m.

Trump is scheduled to address the nation Tuesday about what he called the U.S. -Mexico border crisis, before traveling there Thursday.

Large chunks of the federal government shut down on December 22 over Trump's demand that a bill to keep the federal government operational include more than $5 billion to pay for what he has now said would be a steel structure to protect the border.

About 800,000 federal employees are furloughed or working without pay, leading to financial struggles for them and "potentially siphoning dollars from state economies".

The White House said the letter, as well as details provided during the meeting, sought to answer Democrats' questions about the funding request. Democrats say the wall is expensive and inefficient, as well as contrary to American values.

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway says the group had a "robust exchange" and "questions were asked and answered".

The president also suggested that he would declare a national emergency so as to use the money from the Department of Defense to build the wall, thus bypassing the Congress. Democrats said he might face legal challenges if doing so.

The No. 2 House Democrat is blaming President Donald Trump for the partial government shutdown and says Trump is holding the government "hostage".

The president will continue pressing his case with a trip to the USA southern border on Thursday.

Trump and fellow Republicans have been at odds with Democrats over Trump's demand for $5.6 billion in funding for a wall. "I think all of us who look at what they have here believe that that is true".

However, it's extremely unlikely that Obama privately praised Trump's attempts to fund the border wall, given that Obama has fervently opposed the notion of a border wall in public remarks since Trump began promoting the idea on the campaign trail. In fact, Morgan - whom Trump fired in the early days of his administration - said "historical data" and "facts" confirm walls effectively mitigate illegal immigration.

Trump asserted that he could relate to the plight of the hundreds of thousands of federal workers who aren't getting paid, though he acknowledged they will have to "make adjustments" to deal with the shutdown shortfall.

"As we speak, we are in the middle of an unprecedented crisis on our middle of an unprecedented crisis on our middle of an unprecedented crisis on our southern border", he said October 30, 2016, speech in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

On Monday, Pence told reporters that progress was made in weekend talks that he led between administration officials and congressional staff over how to break the funding impasse and reopen the government.
