Man arrested in teen's abduction

Details of what happened in the almost three months since the girl vanished remain unclear, but Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said Patterson "took many proactive steps to hide his identity from law enforcement and the general public".

Sheriff Fitzgerald did say that he does not plan to hold any further press conferences on this case.

"I hope that she's in good shape", the Mayor said.

The 13-year-old was missing when police arrived, leading to an intense manhunt that ended when she was found alive Thursday about 70 miles from her home, 88 days after she disappeared.

"Jayme was the hero in the case".

"We promised to bring Jayme home and tonight we get to fulfil that promise", Fitzgerald said in a statement, thanking the community.

A 21-year-old man, identified as Jake Thomas Patterson, was arrested shortly after Closs was found Thursday. Her captor was not at home when she managed to flee, Mr Fitzgerald said.

Both Jayme and the suspect have made initial comments to authorities, he said. She had been placed on the FBI's Missing Person's list on October 15 and was considered "endangered".

Investigators said Jayme was quickly ruled out as a suspect.

"Jayme had a pretty good night sleep it was great to know she was next to me all night what a great feeling to have her home".

Jayme went missing on Monday 15 October 2018, after emergency services received a mobile phone call from her family address in Barron. "My beloved sister Denise pooh and brother in law Jim can rest at peace and I keep assuring them Jayme is safe and we will make sure forever". Patterson quit, saying he was moving from the area, Lykken said. He did work for one day at the same meat products plant where James and Denise were long-time employees, but authorities said they did not cross paths in Patterson's short time there. It is about a one-hour, 50-minute drive from Minneapolis, and is about 50 minutes from Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

She said her reaction was "just disbelief - kind of shock that a kid we all knew could have done this".

"We don't really know what shape she's in", he added. She was cleared to leave the hospital and has been talking to investigators.

Gordon is located around 100km north of Barron, Closs's hometown.

He has no criminal record, the sheriff said.

Patterson was in the county jail Friday and is keeping quiet after talking on the day of his arrest. A shotgun was recovered from the home where Jayme was believed held, according to Fitzgerald.

Kristin Kasinskas, who helped report Jayme's emergence to police Thursday, spoke to CNN on Friday about what happened.

Nutter knew of the girl's disappearance, which was reported nationally, and intensely so in the state. Kasinskas told The Star Tribune that she didn't even realize he was her neighbour.

"She said she was lost, she didn´t know where she was", Nutter told AFP. "Why he picked her is the million dollar question we're still trying to determine".

"I'm going to give her the biggest hug and tell her that I'm here for her and that I love her very much", she said on the morning show.

Detectives have not yet established what had happened to the teen over the last three months, the motive for the kidnapping, or how she escaped.

The girl appeared unkempt and thinner than in photos publicly released, Kasinskas said. "And to chase after that is, it's, I mean, she'll never go back to that".

However, neighbors noted they rarely saw Patterson and hadn't seen Jayme around.
